Guideposts to Self-Directed Learning: Expert Commentary on Essential Concepts
Edited by: Drs. Gary J. Confessore & Sharon J. Confessore
Guideposts to Self-Directed Learning offers a thorough and efficient introduction to the subject. This important book presents executive summaries and commentary on 12 published works selected by an international Delphi panel of 49 experts representing 7 countries. The result is a series of chapters -- arranged chronologically to cover a 30-year span of research -- which summarize, critique, and distill the essence of each original author's contribution to the theoretical foundation of self-directed learning. Together, these experts shed light on the nature of self-directed learning, how it can be defined, encouraged, and put to practical use in the classroom, in society, and in the workplace.
The book contains 3 introductory chapters written by the editors: a brief overview of the subject; a discussion of self-directed learning in the workplace, with special emphasis on its application to formal and informal training programs; and a detailed review of the methodology used to select chapter authors and the works they cover. Also included is a Foreword by Dr. Allen Tough, who authored 3 of the works chosen by the Delphi panel.
In its review of the book, Organization Design & Development said, "Guideposts to Self-Directed Learning is a literary milestone that succeeds on two dimensions: as an authoritative resource that is highly enjoyable reading in its own right, and as a practical guide to additional key literature in the area. The book will have special significance for those involved in self-managing or autonomous work teams, as self-directed learning is one of the key components leading to success in this new work design. Use this new volume as the first step in your own self-directed efforts to learn more about this important concept." [more]
